# Getting started with serial number items

What a serial number item is, and how to quickly create one.

A serial number item is an item with a unique identification number — for example a frame number on a bicycle or a serial number on a refrigerator. It is especially relevant in workshops and for appliance dealers. Each serial number item is based on a **base item** that defines which product it refers to.

**Navigation**

You find the module by opening the main menu (Financial) and going to **Product → Serial number items**.

### How to create a serial number item

1\. Go to **Product → Serial number items**.

2\. Click the blue **+** button at the top.

3\. Select which base product the serial number item should be based on.

4\. Fill in the fields — at a minimum **Serial number** (the unique number, e.g. a frame or serial number) and **Display name**.

5\. Click **Save**.

### Good to know

Serial number item management is not enabled by default. It is activated per product (or product category) via the **Requires serial number item** setting on the product.

You can also attach files (e.g. a service manual) to a serial number item and choose to have them follow along on quotes, sales orders or invoices.
